Q & A with Peter and Livia Pack, Owners, Pack Safari, Windhoek, Namibia.
Since 1995 offering wildlife safaris to small groups by fly-in aircraft and overland vans.
Guided tours in Namibia and Botswana are available in English or German languages.
Namibia is larger than 300k square miles which makes it about 2.5 times the size of Germany. Yet, Namibia has a population of only 2.3 million citizens, so it is one of the least populated countries in the world!
HOW DO MOST TRAVELERS GET TO NAMIBIA?
Some take road transportation here from South Africa. There are also direct flights from Frankfurt [Germany] or from Johannesburg [South Africa] to Windhoek which is our national capital. Namibia attracts about 1.4 million inbound travelers per year mainly from the UK, the Netherlands, Scandinavian countries, and North America.
WHAT IS A SURPRISING FACT ABOUT NAMIBIA?
We have the distinction of being in the top 10 countries of the world with the least amount of rainfall.
There is a good chance for Black Rhino sightings thanks to the wildlife conservation and annual management plans established by our government. There are lions who have adapted to desert living, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, meerkats, jackals, even hippos and water buffalos in the wetlands and floodplains regions. You will see plenty of vultures and falcons, and in the wetlands there are all kinds of wading birds. Visitors often request tours to Etosha National Park and the Namib-Naukluft National Park among others if they are most interested in the wildlife of Namibia.
There is a short rainy season from January to March [summer in southern Africa], but Namibia is considered a year-round destination.
WHAT CLOTHES DO YOU RECOMMEND?
We suggest bringing lightweight and functional clothing. A good solid pair of shoes for walking is essential. Bring a hat that will cover your face and neck, and be sure to pack a sunscreen product, it is 340 days of sun here per year! Also bring a jacket for the evenings.
We support a number of social projects in the region. Generally we do not recommend that guests bring items because though they are well-intentioned, these might fall outside of our support plan. Instead, you can read about our projects on our site and make a donation online - CLICK HERE.
They stay at bush or river lodges we recommend that are owner-operated and eco-friendly.
HOW DO YOU SELECT YOUR GUIDES?
Often they come to us through referrals. Once new guides are hired, we train them according to a strict code of conduct.
WHY IS ECOTOURISM IMPORTANT TO YOU?
It is a privilege to operate in a such a beautiful country as Namibia, and through sustainable efforts we hope to ensure that it will stay that way for many years to come.
