Campania is one of the most famous regions in southern Italy. It stretches along the Tyrrhenian Sea with an incredibly beautiful coastline featuring amazing cliff-side towns and charming off-shore islands. Its two largest cities are Naples and Salerno. In addition to the gorgeous scenery, this area tempts you with a most delicious cuisine.
Who doesn't love pizza? It is eaten and enjoyed by people all over the world. But the original was the Margherita pizza, and it was created in Naples which is located on the Campania coast! There are just a few key ingredients required for this yummy pizza: tomato sauce made from San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese made with buffalo milk, and topped with a few fresh green basil leaves and a drizzle of olive oil.
Gnocchi alla Sorrentina [also known as Gnocchi Sorrento] is a traditional recipe from the coastal town of Sorrento. However, there is no seafood involved! Instead, the dish consists of gnocchi (pasta made with potatoes), mozzarella, and fresh basil leaves. It is topped with pecorino cheese and more mozzarella before being baked and served.
The name comes from the many thin layers that give this seashell-shaped pastry a flaky crust. The pastry is filled with a cinnamon and citrus ricotta cheese filling and is lightly dusted on top with powdered sugar. It is the perfect bakery sweet to go with your morning coffee.
Limoncello is one of the most famous liquors in all of Italy, and it hails from the Amalfi Coast. Once you see the amazing lemons grown in this region, then you will understand why these fruits just had to be made into a drink. They are gigantic lemons, rich with flavor, and give this tasty digestive its vibrant yellow color and refreshing tangy taste.
If Italy is shaped like a boot, then Puglia is the heel. It is almost entirely bordered by two seas. Puglia is known for its beautiful beaches, extensive and ancient farmlands and rich cuisine.
Cozze alla Tarantina
With so much coastline, you can be sure that seafood is always on the menu. Cozze alla Taratina is a soup-like dish featuring fresh mussels that are cooked in a garlic tomato sauce base and served with slices of oven-toasted bread.
Homemade pasta is a huge part of the food tradition in Puglia. Orecchiette, which means “little ears” in Italian, are the most famous of the Pugliese pasta shapes. You will typically find this pasta offered on menus as cime di rape (a pasta dish with cooked broccoli rape), or possibly as orecchiette mixed with seafood, or simply as pasta topped with a rich meaty sauce.
Puglia is home to many famous wine producers in Italy. Here you will find vineyards growing the large purple Negroamaro variety of grapes that make the full-bodied red wines associated with the Salento region. A glass of robust red wine of this type is the perfect companion for any one of the rich tomato and garlic sauce dishes you will want to try.
The Pasticciotto also comes from the area of Salento and was first created sometime back in the 18th century. This popular dessert can be found in pastry shops throughout the Puglia region. It looks like a mini-pie which is typically filled with a ricotta cheese custard and then baked. Goes nicely with an espresso. Enjoy!
