Puerto Rico
Though a United States territory for over a century, there is much to remind the visitor of Puerto Rico’s Spanish heritage. Perhaps Old San Juan is the best example, from its blue slag cobblestone streets to the restored colonial-era buildings to the old fort still standing guard at the harbor’s entrance. To date more travelers visit San Juan than any other single destination in Puerto Rico and the entire Caribbean region.
Yet there is much more to this beautiful island. Many enjoy a visit to El Yunque National Park which is the only tropical rainforest within the entire US National Forest system. You can stop by the Hacienda Carabali for mountain biking or horse riding activities, or you can try ziplining or river tubing. There is also the Humacao nature reserve to visit. Popular spots also include the offshore islands of Vieques and Culebrita known for white beaches and for snorkeling or diving. Vieques is also known for its “bio bays” which glow at night due to the presence of microscopic plankton in the water. La Parguera and La Ceiba have similar bays or lagoons to explore by kayak or SUP.
Puerto Rico is in the tropical climate zone and is known for hot and humid weather particularly during the summer months. The rain season there extends from April to November. Such conditions are perfect for reptiles such as geckos, salamanders, iguanas, frogs and snakes. In the surrounding Caribbean Sea one can see marine mammals like dolphins, manatees, and whales, plus a wide variety of fish, rays, and sharks.
